Police link fatal crash with stabbing
An officer is responding to a report of a shooting Saturday morning in the 2100 block of Koval Boulevard, police said.
When the officer arrived, the two victims, described as men in their 20s and 30s, suffered gunshot wounds. The suspects fled.
The driver of a white Chevrolet Malibu stopped, according to an update from the Dallas Police Department. A brief pursuit ensued, leading to gunfire and a crash.
The victim's driver, the officer says, tried to stop traffic in the area.
Police said the passenger in the Malibu fled, but was subsequently pulled into an area near a parking garage where police believed the suspects had been hiding. The officer, the driver and an unidentified suspect were in the car, and the driver was shot in the left leg while fleeing, police said.
The officer was unresponsive when he arrived and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was released from the hospital after five hours. The officer is now out of surgery and expected to survive.
The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is being held on $250,000 bond, police said.

The other occupant, the driver, who is also expected to survive the shooting, has been described as a male in his early 20s or early 30s, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 160 pounds and weighing between 130 and 160 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
He was wearing a dark coat with a blue interior and blue jeans. He was wearing a black sweatshirt. No description of the suspect has been released.

A witness told authorities that as officers took the car away, a large group of people began to run.
Shortly before 6:45 a.m., a single man appeared and got into the vehicle behind the suspects. That man said he had been walking his dog in a park north of the parking garage when he heard four to five gunshots, the witness said.
When the witness asked how many of them there were, he said the four or five that had escaped from the vehicle got back in and left.
Around 6 a.m., another witness on the scene told police that he'd seen a man run up the street towards the building and then down the street towards the parking garage before he saw the shooter exit a gray Dodge Neon.

Japan quake triggers tsunami alert in Tokyo (Photo credit: AFP)
A huge landslide has toppled the Japanese flag over Tokyo's main airport on Thursday, local media reported.
The landslide damaged an expressway entrance and blocked a main street at the busy airport near Yokohama harbour.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived by helicopter to the scene on Thursday and said an investigation was under way into what caused the landslide.
Some 4,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in the affected zone.
Japanese government officials initially estimated damage at about 1.3 billion yen (2.8 million euros, 2.4 million pounds) and said there could be landslides that may extend into the weekend.
A tsunami warning issued at 4am in parts of the central and northern regions of Japan was lifted shortly after 6am local time on Friday.
The government later revised the scale and time of the warning.

WENZILLER, Wisconsin — A federal grand jury declined Wednesday to bring criminal charges against a Wisconsin farmer who had an affair with the farmer's daughter and who forced the girl to marry the farmer's son instead of him, according to court records.
Prosecutors said the family of James Biela Jr., 64, of Wenzilla, was "disproportionately angry" after the farmer, 61, made contact with his young daughter in 2009.
The elder Biela, of Watzillersville, made the contact because he is the son of the farmer's wife, who apparently didn't support him. Court records do not say why Biela tried to seduce his 14-year-old daughter.
The younger Biela, too, is a farmer. His daughter, who is now married, has filed for divorce.
In June, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey D. Nussbaum sided with prosecutors who said Biela's conduct made no sense given the financial situation in the farm.
"Biela's conduct was unprofessional and irresponsible, and his behavior was not justified by the evidence," Nussbaum wrote.
The decision came after a 12-month investigation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Nussbaum said his decision reflects his belief that the "tribal values" Biela practiced were not the same as those expressed by tribal members.
Biela's attorney, Michael S. Mettlau, did not return phone calls Wednesday seeking comment.
Wennersville police said they received "at least 14 complaints" about Biela after the woman complained in August. One woman who was arrested was described as a "very attractive female" who had allegedly gone to the farm with Biela. The rest of the complaints involved his contact with the female.
Wennersville police also received about 11 additional complaints about Biela's contact with the child in 2011 and 2011-12, court records show.
Mettlau and Biela's ex-wife did not return telephone calls Wednesday. He and his attorney did not respond to questions about the case.
